With deep roots you can weather any storm

The US Army moved me to Kansas, where the book and movie The Wizard of Oz take place. You’ve probably said, “We’re not in Kansas anymore.” I don’t know what it says about your state when it’s most famous attribute is people leaving it. Kansas is also well known for its tornados, which means that its other most renowned fact is that it’s Wicked.
I’ve gone through hurricanes, thunderstorms, and tornados. I’ve seen buildings demolished, houses whipped out, and cars thrown across a farm field. In the middle of some of the most violent and destructive storms on earth, I’ve also seen palm trees bent almost to the ground yet never uprooted. I’ve also seen mighty oak trees that looked practically unaffected where nothing manmade was left standing.

The Importance of Roots
Seeing a tree thriving in the middle of absolute destruction got me thinking. Why can the mighty oak stand against storms that demolish everything else? I think there’s a practical lesson we can all learn from the mighty oak tree. We all face storms—difficult moments that test our strength. Yet, just as a tree withstands fierce winds and heavy rains by growing deep roots, we can also cultivate our foundation to navigate life's challenges.
Roots are more than just a tree's anchor; they are its source of nourishment and stability. A tree with shallow roots may bend and break during a storm, while one with deep roots stands firm against adversity. In our lives, deep roots symbolize our values, relationships, and inner strength. They help us remain grounded, even when chaos surrounds us.

1. Know Your Values
The first step in deepening your roots involves identifying what truly matters. Life is full of distractions, and it requires courage and wisdom to clarify the values most important to you. Spending time answering these questions is never wasted. You can’t make decisions that align with your values until you’ve taken the time to determine what is most important to you. This clarity acts as a strong anchor during turbulent times, guiding you toward choices that honor God and the person you want to be in the future.
2. Build Strong Relationships
Just as oak trees intertwine their roots with others for support, cultivating strong relationships can strengthen your foundation. Surround yourself with a few people who lift you up, challenge you, and want to see you grow. Friends like this can offer comfort and wisdom when the wind blows hard against you. Don’t feel ashamed to reach out to your support network when the winds of life become fierce. You need a root network like this to keep you standing in some of the worst storms.
3. Never Stop Learning
Deep roots are not static; they grow and adapt. Committing to lifelong growth and learning equips you with the tools to face challenges head-on. Whether through formal education, reading, or engaging in new experiences, continuous growth challenges you and expands your perspective. The more you learn, the deeper your roots become, allowing you to navigate uncertainties better.
4. Take Time to Reflect
In the hustle of everyday life, it’s easy to lose touch with your soul. A few minutes to slow down and reflect can help you cultivate resilience as strong as an oak. Taking the time to remind yourself of the experiences that God has delivered you from allows you to process your emotions and strengthen the roots of understanding and compassion within you. Like a palm tree in the middle of a hurricane, this practice can create a calm center that steadies you amidst the chaos.
5. Bend with the Wind
No one has the power to stop the wind. Since you can’t control the wind, your only option is to bend with it. Just as trees yield to the wind, you must learn to adapt. Accepting that change is constant allows you to cultivate flexibility—without it, you will break at the slightest breeze. When storms arise, you can learn to sway with the winds instead of resisting, finding strength in your adaptability. This ability to embrace uncertainty can turn your challenges into opportunities for growth.
As you navigate the storms of life, be like the mighty oak, which stands firm with deep, intertwined roots. By nurturing your values, building strong relationships, and accepting change, you can cultivate a root system strong enough to withstand any destruction that comes your way.
So, deepen your roots. Stand tall. Weather the storms gracefully, knowing that every challenge is an opportunity to grow by learning to rely on God’s strength. Remember, it’s not the storms that define you, but how you grow through them.
