Why Easter is the vaccine for COVID-19

I’m writing this blog today in the middle of one of the world’s biggest events in human history. Never in my lifetime, perhaps never before in human history, has this much of the world been in the same circumstances at the same time The COVID-19 virus has significantly impacted almost every person on planet earth. Right now, there is a stay-at-home, shelter-in-place order in most of the United States. Most countries around the world have closed their borders, and many medical systems are overwhelmed by the impact of this virus.
Even if you live in a region where this virus isn’t widespread, everyone’s life has been touched by the global efforts to reduce the spread of the COVID-19 virus. My heart goes out to the world leaders who are trying to balance the impact that this virus is having on their nations and the infection rates in their regions. There is no question that this virus would be much more deadly if these extreme measures hadn’t been put in place worldwide. However, there have also been some unintended consequences as a result of these global efforts to reduce the spread of the COVID-19 virus.
People can carry this virus without any noticeable symptoms for weeks. Therefore, reducing the spread of this virus has become the greatest international effort I’ve ever seen. Many people are struggling with the uncertainty of who may or may not be carrying the virus. As a result, people are struggling emotionally, physically, psychologically, and spiritually. In God’s divine providence, this virus is reaching its Apex during the holy week of the Christian calendar.
It is not a coincidence that Easter Sunday may be the high watermark for the COVID-19 virus in the United States and other developed countries. I am convinced that Easter holds the answer to most other struggles people are dealing with as a result of this virus. Here are my top 3 of reasons why the Easter message answers the struggles people are going through as a result of COVID-19.
The antidote to anxiety
One of the things that has made COVID-19 so scary is the lack of medical breakthroughs to prevent the spread of this virus. Modern medicine is so advanced that we rarely have seen a medical phenomenon like this. There is no known antidote to the COVID-19 virus! There is no inoculation to prevent someone from contracting the virus. These two facts are creating a lot of fear all over the world right now. When someone with a compromised immune system contracts this virus, it could be deadly. This anxiety about the unknown is where most people around the world are right now.
The world is waiting for a solution to this virus. Until that medical solution is discovered, the thing that we can find is a solution to the anxiety and fear created by this virus. We need hope in the midst of an uncertain future! That hope is found in the resurrection of the Lord Jesus Christ!
This is the logic the Bible is using in 1 Corinthians 15:20-28. In this passage, the author is describing the significance of the Easter message. He’s saying that because the tomb of Jesus Christ is empty, people can have hope in the midst of an uncertain future. In fact, his argument is that there is no hope for humanity if that tomb isn’t empty.
The resurrection of Jesus Christ is the demonstration of hope in the midst of all difficulties. Because the empty tomb puts the power of God on display, it is the answer for life’s greatest uncertainties. The empty tomb is the antidote to all anxiety.
Bigger than my bank account
Even if you are not struggling with the physical effects of COVID-19, most of the world’s economies have been severely impacted by this virus. Almost everyone around the world has been financially impacted as a result of the efforts to slow the spread of this virus.
This means that many people are wondering what is going to happen to their personal finances. Will they have enough money to pay the mortgage? Will they be able to feed their family as a result of the massive financial impact of this virus? It has brought the sharpest decline in GDP and fastest rise in unemployment in the history of America. Nothing else even comes close to the financial impact of this virus has had in such a short period of time. Most of the world’s economies are like runaway freight trains rolling downhill, which nothing can stop. It feels, to a lot of people, like they are helpless, and this situation is becoming dire.
That’s why 1 Corinthians 15:27 is so important for people to hear right now. It shows that God has put all things under Jesus’s control. This means he has placed COVID-19 under Jesus’s control. It also means that God has placed your economic circumstances in Jesus’s hands. God is bigger than the problems you are facing with your bank account right now. And he is willing to meet your financial and physical needs if you’ll trust him with them. If you trust in a God who is big enough to raise the dead, you can certainly trust him with your finances, as well.
The ICU can’t hold me
The most important message you should hear from 1 Corinthians 15:23 is the message of resurrection. The Bible is absolutely clear about the future of all men and women who place faith in Jesus, the resurrected Messiah. 1 Corinthians 15 also addresses the global health concerns. Many people are locked inside their houses wondering what will happen to them if they contract this virus personally. They are wondering what might happen to them if they end up in the intensive care unit of a local hospital with the COVID-19 virus. Some people are beginning to ask for the first time in their life, what happens to me if I die because of this virus?
This is the most important question any human being can ask right now. This is the only question that matters in light of the hundreds of thousands who are dead because of this virus. At the most basic level, people are asking the question, what happens to you after you die? Is there an afterlife?
This is THE message of Easter. Only a man who was dead and came back out of the grave can answer this question! This is why the world needs to hear the Easter message this Sunday. The coronavirus cannot stop the message of Easter.
1 Corinthian 15:22-23 gives a rock-sold promise of eternal life through the resurrection of Jesus Christ. If Jesus came back out of the tomb, then there is life after death! This passage makes it clear… All of us will die. Perhaps the COVID-19 virus won’t kill you; something else will. It’s a 100% guarantee. According to these verses, after death, all people will be raised. Some will be raised to spend eternity with God in Heaven, others will spend an eternity separated from him in Hell. What’s the difference?
Faith in Jesus’s death and resurrection alone as payment for your sins is what separates the eternal destinies of all people on earth.
If you will turn from your sins and trust in Jesus through simple faith, he will respond by giving you hope for the future that is bigger than the impact of the COVID-19 virus. If you feel the Holy Spirit drawing you into a relationship with Jesus right now, you can surrender your future to him through this simple prayer:
Dear God, I recognize that I am a sinner. I understand that my sin deserves punishment. Yet, I believe that you love me so much that you sacrificed your son, Jesus, as the payment for my sin. I believe that he really died on a hillside many years ago; that his body was placed in a tomb, and that on the first Easter Sunday, he rose to life again. Today, I turn from my sin and trust only in the Lord Jesus Christ as my Savior. I believe that his death paid the price for my sin, and his resurrection secures the promise of eternal life in Heaven with you. From this moment forward, I will follow you wherever you lead me. Amen.
